Changing Goal Details

Select any goal at Strategy Tree, to do this you should click on any goal icon or text, for instance, this icon: add goal indicator.

In the bottom and right corner, a panel will appear with goal details information:

Goal indicator settings

Fields and values

  • Value field is the current value for this certain goal. If you measure business costs in US$ and the current cost is 10,000$ per month, then you should put 10000 in value field. But, first, make sure you have specified necessary min and max values.
  • Measure field allows to specify some pre-defined measurement units, such as %% and "Score". "Score" is for any measurement unit, it might be dollars, foots, number of people or something else. To have a better description of your measurement units you have a Target Description field.
  • Min and Max values determines the possible minimum and maximum values. These values are taken into account when program calculates the total performance within category. For instance, if the max value is 200 and the min value is 0 and you current value is 50, then the total performance will be 25%. If you will change the min value to 50, then you current performance will be 0%.
  • Optimization drop box determines how to calculate the total performance, it has two options - maximize RP and minimize RP (where RP is for Real Performance, MP is current performance). Please, see an example below for more information
  • The Target Description is a text field that you can use for any goal-related information, for instance, put here measurement units description or more idea about how you are going to measure the performance of the goal.

Optimization drop box

Balanced Scorecard Designer uses a linear function to calculate the performance of the goal. Once the performance of the goal is calculated Balanced Scorecard Designer will calculate the average performance values for category and the tree. Using and "Optimization" drop box in goal's details you can change the way BSC Designer will treat the current values in the process of total performance calculation.

This is the sample part of strategy tree:

We have left the only goal "Test Goal", it's weight is 1 but it doesn't matter in this case. Let's click on the goal and check its settings:

Change goal indicator settings

The current value is 22%, while the minimal possible value is 15% and the maximal possible value is 80%. Thus, the total calculated performance is 10,77%. It means, that you will need to increase your current value from 22% to 80% and your current progress is 10,77%.

What if you would need to increase current value from 22% to, say, 30%? Let's try it with BSC Designer:

The max performance value of the indicator

and BSC Designer displays the other value for the category performance:

The selected performance indicator

The new value is 46,67, because we have changed the maximum value and the current value stays now closer to target maximum value.

What if we need not to maximize, but minimize the current value. For instance, if we talk about number of items with defects we'd like to lower this value. Let's change our test-goal a little.

  1. First, we will change the measure units to "Score" value and will write some comment in Target Description.
  2. Assume, the the current defect number is 5%.
  3. Some days it was 8%, but let's use ever higher value, we will set the maximum value equal to 10%.
  4. What will be the minimal value? Is it 0%? Actually, no, as it is impossible to make it 0% now, so the real minimal value is 2%.
  5. Now, we should change the optimization strategy from "Maximize RP" to "Minimize RP", telling BSC Designer that we want to minimize the total performance.

Here is the resulted goal details settings:

As you can see the "Min" value is highlighted with bold, telling you the the optimization current strategy in minimization. The total performance value for category is 62,5%. If we will make the current value lower and make it 4 units, then the total performance will be 75%.
